After 3 wins in 6 games, Santos coach sacked after 8 months in Poland: ‘It’s over’

Poland coach Fernando Santos, 69, who led the team to a Euro victory with Cristiano Ronaldo, has been fired after just eight months in charge.

The Polish Football Association (PZPN) announced on Thursday (ET) that “as of September 13, Coach Santos will leave the Polish national team.”

The announcement came in the wake of Poland’s 0-2 loss to Albania in their Euro2024 qualifying Group E fifth match. 바카라

Santos took charge of Poland in March and led them to a 1-0 victory over Germany in a friendly in June, but suffered a similar fate to former Germany national team coach Juergen Klick just three months later.

A poor Euro2024 qualifying campaign was the final straw. Poland won two, drew three and lost two of their five games for just six points. They are in fourth place in Group E behind Albania (10 points), the Czech Republic (8 points), and Moldova (8 points). It is believed that the Polish Football Federation has decided that a change of manager is necessary in order to rebound in the remaining Euro qualifiers.

Santos succeeded current United Arab Emirates boss Paulo Bento and led Portugal to Euro 2016 and the European Nations League titles in 2018 and 2019. However, he was relieved of his duties after a shock loss to Morocco in the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In January, Bento beat the junior to the Poland job. After guiding South Korea to the round of 16 at the World Cup, Bento took charge of the United Arab Emirates in July and won his debut with a 4-1 victory over Costa Rica this month.
