Suwon Samsung striker Oh Hyun-gyu (22) is expected to head to Europe. The final destination is Celtic, a prestigious club in Scotland, where Ki Sung-yong (34, FC Seoul) and Cha Doo-ri (43) played.
British media Sky Sports reported on the 23rd (Korean time), “Celtic has concluded an agreement with Suwon Samsung to sign Oh Hyun-kyu for a transfer fee of 2.5 million pounds (about 3.827 billion won).”
The media added, “Both sides have verbally agreed on the terms of the contract, and the transfer process will be officially finalized as soon as possible.”
Another media outlet, The Celtic Star, also reported that “Celtic agrees to a £2.5m deal with Suwon Bluewings to sign Hyeon-Gyu Oh”. According to the Celtic Star, Oh Hyun-kyu is actively recruiting Celtic, and now it is known that only a medical test remains.
Sky Sports said, “Celtic also showed interest in signing Cho Kyu-seong (25, Jeonbuk Hyundai). However, negotiations with Jeonbuk have been suspended.”
Hyunkyu Oh is from Suwon Youth Maetan Middle School – Maetang High School. He made his K-League debut at the age of 18 in 2019 when he was still a high school student. He was the first field player to sign a semi-professional contract in the K-League at the time.
The issue of his military service was also resolved early. He returned to Suwon Samsung in 2021 after fulfilling his defense duties at Gimcheon Sangmu.
Oh Hyun-kyu played 36 K-League games last season, scoring 13 goals and 3 assists, establishing himself as the league’s top striker. After being called up to the national team for a domestic evaluation match against Iceland in November last year, he was named in the Qatar World Cup reserve list (26+1) and was with the players throughout the tournament.
Celtic, founded in 1887, is Scotland’s most prestigious club. The number of league championships alone is a whopping 52 times. They form a representative rivalry with the Rangers (55 championships). Including Daizen Maeda (26), Leo Hatate (26), Kyogo Furuhashi (29), and Yuki Kobayashi (23), there are only six Japanese players playing. 먹튀검증
