Kim continued his upward trend following his tie for second at the AT&T Byron Nelson, which ended two weeks ago, while Ahn Byung-hun is looking to break into the “top ten” for the first time in a month and a half after a tie for sixth at the Valero Texas Open last month.
England’s Harry Hall carded eight birdies without a bogey to take sole possession of the lead with an 8-under 62, while American Harris English is three shots back in second place at 5-under.
Lee Kyung-hun is tied for 22nd at 2-under 68, while Lim Sung-jae is tied for 82nd at 2-over par after the first round.
Club “lesson pro” Michael Block, who competed in the PGA Championship last week and finished tied for 15th with one hole-in-one, was an invitee to the tournament and collapsed to an 11-over-par 81 on the first day, leaving him in a tie for 120th.
Block made two birdies, but seven bogeys and three double-bogeys showed the high barriers of the tour.
